Jayne Enjoys a Weekend Break in Italy's Most Beautiful City of Venice

Where does someone who works in the travel industry go for a weekend break? For me it was Venice (not having been there for some years). Leaving the husbands at home, last weekend myself with my friend Diane in tow set off. Even though it was cold, the weather was sunny and bright, so much nicer when walking a city. The water levels though were quite high so lesson 1 is, when taking a water taxi from the airport to the city, don’t wear a tight skirt! I almost needed a trampoline to get into the boat!

We treated ourselves and stayed in the fantastic Hotel Bauer, with its position just 5 minutes walk to St Mark’s Square was perfect. The service in the hotel was second to none and it thoroughly deserves its reputation as one of the Leading Hotels of the World. We walked the City and used the efficient Vaporetto public transport boats, but don’t take your eyes off the Canal, those boats are in and out like a flash, one turn of the head and you’ve missed it. We visited most of the Churches, Academia Art Gallery and the Doge’s Palace. Beware of the famous Harry’s Bar, reputed to have created the peach bellini, it cost us €38 for 2! I wouldn’t have minded if it was a buzzy atmosphere but the waiters all had long faces. Quite unlike the famous Café Florian, where even though a coffee will set you back €10 at least the staff were happy! One tip – try the cheap and cheerful “Osterias” – small bar/restaurant type establishments that sell the most wonderful tapas – great for lunch with a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio  to wash it all down! The only disappointment was that I couldn’ find the Irish pub so on Saturday 16th March, so I missed my team, Wales, thrash the English in Cardiff. Still there were compensations in being in such a beautiful city. Where next? Keep watching the site for more adventures.
